The African
Elephant and their plight across the African continent remains one of the
greatest and most controversial issues for modern day conservationists. With
wild habitats for elephant populations shrinking the total amount of land for
these herds are being reduced at an alarming rate! More recently this relationship re-appeared in Southern Africa in the form of Elephant-Back Safaris. Culling operations in Zimbabwe in the 70;s and 80’s produced a number of orphans being sold to private farmers in an attempt to raise much needed funds for National parks. The elephants were soon to outgrow their small habitats on farms and It was through these culls that the Zimbabwean model for domesticated elephants was born, based on the overall vision that allows for Domesticated elephants to pursue a lifestyle, which is similar to wild elephants and at the same time, through tourism play a vital role in conservation through education. This unique relationship between man and elephant is based on the utilization of positive reinforcement training methods and founded on trust and mutual respect between man and animal. Pilanesberg Elephant-Back Safaris opened in South Africa 2002 bringing untold joy to visiting tourists and offering these elephants a safe and secure home and future.
