Lesotho adventures start at Malealea. Explore the area around Malealea on day outings and overnight treks. We can arrange companions to accompany your trip. They will introduce you to local chiefs and help to locate camping sites and ensure your safety.

Pony trekking at Malealea

No visit to Lesotho would be incomplete without a pony trek. It is the transport of choice for most Basotho as the sturdy ponies handle the narrow trails better than any 4X4 can. On your trek you will experience "THE REAL AFRICA".

Daytrips at Malealea

Get the feel of life in a Basotho village by taking a walk around the village. Visit the local museum, school, garden project and consult the traditional healer.

Day hikes, pony treks and scenic drives

There are a number of options available to those who want to explore the mountains and valleys around Malealea. First, decide if you want to walk or ride. Then head off to see waterfalls, canyons, rockpools, bushmen paintings and other stunning views. Hikers can take the "donkey work" out of backpacking by hiring horses to carry their luggage.

Overnight pony trek & hiking trails routes

Explore remote Lesotho on longer treks and hiking trails. Accommodation is provided in huts hired from the Basotho people in remote areas. No riding experience is necessary for overnight treks. Basotho Guides and a packhorse accompany the treks.

Scenic drives

Test your driving skills. There are many routes around Malealea that each lead to somplace exciting. Some routes are perfect for normal vehicles and normal drivers. Others need to be tackled with a 4x4 and by experienced drivers only.

Malealea offers Lesotho in a nutshell

Lesotho is a world without fences. Breathtaking scenery abounds and every season has unique attractions. Malealea is situated in a remote part of Western Lesotho that is breathtaking in its beauty. This is a chance to experience traditional Basotho life.

Malealea is perfect for a 2 or 3 night stay en-route from Johannesburg to Cape Town, East London or Port Elizabeth and en-route from the Drakensberg to Graaff-Reinett.

Malealea Lodge is run by the owners, the Jones family. They are credited with more local knowledge than anyone. Various Basotho childrens’ choirs and a local Basotho music band using their local homemade instruments entertain the guests in the evenings around a campfire.

Bathrooms

The rondavels and farmhouse bedrooms are all en suite. There are 3 communal bathroom for the Basotho huts. There are communal facilities for the guests in forest huts and the campers.

Linen

All rooms except the Forest Huts have linen. Please bring your own sleeping bags along if you are staying in a Forest Hut.

Meals

Home cooked meals are served at the Lodge. There is a dining hall and an outside deck where you can enjoy your meals.

Self-catering

There are two basic backpacker-type communal kitchens for those who want to self-cater.

Electricity

A generator powers Malealea’s electricity. The lights go on at 6:00p.m and go off at 10:00p.m. Please bring torches (flashlights).

Shop & bar

There is a shop and bar on site for basic food supplies.

Heaters

Heaters are available for hire. Please ask at reception.
